Write a scene that comes out right

The three things a scene needs in the box: what happens, who says what, and how long.

You do not need to know how to prompt. You need to know your scene. Three things go in the box.

1. What happens

One or two sentences, plain. "She pulls her hood back, looks up at the rain, and smiles." Who moves, where, how it feels.

2. Who says what

Put the line in quotes and say who says it. "I told you not to come back." The character says it, and the mouth and the timing follow the words. Keep it to a line or two for a 5-second clip; a 20-second clip can carry a short exchange.

3. How long

Pick 5, 10, 15 or 20 seconds. A look is 5 seconds. A line and a reaction is 10. A short exchange is 20. Longer than that, make it two clips.

What to leave out

Camera jargon, lens numbers, lists of adjectives. Describe it the way you would tell a friend what you saw, and let the shot follow.
